In 1820, the historian James Hardiman wrote that the Claddagh ‘from time immemorial has been ruled by one of their own body, periodically elected, who is dignified with the title of mayor, [who] regulates the community according to their own peculiar laws and customs.’ Join Dr John Cunningham, NUIG, as he discusses the ‘mayor’ and his role as head of the community during the 19th century. Age 10+
