Dominican Silverware and Altar Cloth
Following the Cromwellian invasion of Galway in 1652, many of the city's established merchants families and leading figures were forced into exile. The Dominican nuns fled to Spain and brought with them valuable silverware. They safely returned years later to a much poorer city. While on exile the nuns acquired the skill of embroidery. The Order have allowed the Museum to borrow and put on display a collection of Galway made silverware including chalices and candlesticks and an altar frontal (see below) made by Sr Margaret Joyce, 1726.
