The 25th Galway Early Music Festival (22 to 24 May 2020), “Passaggio: Musical Journeys in Time and space”,  explores Ireland’s location as a cultural crossroads in the development of music between the 12th and 18th centuries (and sometimes much earlier!) and how these exchanges have influenced the diversity of music today.

Join Simon O’Dwyer of Ancient Music Ireland as he presents his interpretation of the set of pre-historic pipes found at the bottom of a fulachta fiadh in Bray, Co Wicklow in 2003.  The talk starts with film of the identification of the original pipes fresh from the find.  The designing of new fipples and the tuning is then discussed and demonstrated. Tunes will be played live on the new prototype instrument.  Ancient Music Ireland presents the revelation of the fipple pipes as a Jurassic Park moment in the world of music.  The voice of an instrument from millennium 3BC is awakened by newly-designed fipples from millennium 3AD.
