This a six pence work or truck token dated 1816 from Menlough Castle. The castle was built in 1569 and was the ancestral home of the Blake family until July 1910 when disaster struck and the castle was destroyed by fire. Work tokens were a way of paying wages and exploited workers as they could often only be used to buy goods from the estates they were issued from, at highly inflated prices.
